In this picture, David Day and Lee Mott are preparing the “sling” under the bridge end. By putting a solid steel rock bar under the 2 phone poles and then attaching chains to both ends, the lifting effort will be evenly distributed – avoiding the tendency to crush the two poles together, which would ruin the otherwise fine decking. The wire rope in the foreground is the middle of a high line, strung between the two spar trees. A pulley with a large hook will be placed on the rope and the sling chains will be attached to the hook. You can also see the green rope belay on the back pole. This will keep the bridge from moving sideways as the lift starts. (photo by Bill Taggart)
